A Sad Ending

Well it's hard to believe I have worked here at Vern's for 6 years. The time has went by fast, most of the time. So it'd hard to say but we are closing after almost 7 years here in Shelton. The sad fact is people just don't support locally owned business. It's just cheaper to eat at the corporate business', even sadder is the food they serving is killing us and yet we will trade our heath for a cheap burger not even thinking where that money goes and the people we hurt by not spreading our money aroun.

Vern's and Wild Mushrooms

I look forward to mushroom season every year. New specials, variety for the mushroom soup, and the beauty of fresh buttons. What don't I like? Cleaning and processing 30 pounds at a time. The guests are what is important and they enjoy every morel and chanterelle that we bring in!  Chef Treacy put me in charge of bartering for mushrooms so I have had to learn a lot. I have to know what is in season, what the going price is, and insure that we get only good quality mushrooms. Ah, life in the restaurant.

Chef Treacy's Garden

This is the first time I have had my own garden! So far I have been able to deliver herbs, squash, new potatoes, radishes to the restaurant. Soon carrots, cucumbers, and more. This is as fresh as we can get. We also buy basil from Barnyard Gardens located right here in Mason Co. and have been buying our lettuce, spinach, patty pan squash and cabbage from Brittany Pouch also located right here! I feel we all need to buy local because it is better for our environment and our local economy. I am learning so much, and hope that next year will be even better.
